GERMANY Fri 4/1

April Fool’s Day! There were no jokes played on each other today but there were a lot of laughs. A bunch of us went on a guided bike tour around Munich. I haven't been on a bike since before I learned how to drive so I was a bit rusty at first. After a while though, I got the hang of it. It was so cool riding around Munich and seeing all of the sights. The scary parts were crossing the roads and dodging people. The good news is Germany has bike paths that only bikes can go on. If you end up walking on one, people get mad...a few people learned that lesson the hard way. Germany built the bike paths, the underground rail system and many other things after we bombed and destroyed their city during WWII. Silver lining to a bad war, Munich is one of the most well planned out cities in all of Europe. For lunch we stopped at a Chinese Beer Garden where I had my one and only half liter of beer. I'm not a big beer drinker and in fact I don't like beer at all. But since I was in Germany and it was the weekend of their Starkbeer Fest (think of Oktoberfest only milder) I decided to jump on the band wagon and experience Germany like a true German. By the way it was not uncommon to see people drinking beer at 8am here. That was surprising to me! After lunch, we got back on our bikes and finished our tour. Drinking and riding a bike is sort of illegal over here but as long as you keep your bike straight, our leader said we'll be fine. Though most people did drink a liter of dark beer (which is equal to about 3 beers at 8%) everyone was capable of driving their bike. On our bike tour, we learned some of the history about Hitler and saw some of his famous spots. We also saw a nudist park but all of the nudists’ were far away where you couldn't see anything. That was actually just by luck, apparently they're not afraid to walk up to you and start a conversation. I'm not sure how I would have felt having a naked man talk to me...I'm gonna go with awkward.
That night, our group went to the famous Hopper House where I should have drunk a beer but I was not in the mood for one. The one at lunch was ok but I would have been fine not drinking it too. I guess I'm a shame to Germany and Wisconsin. Oh well. The waiter wasn't too happy with me and our new friend Maggie ordered water. He slammed our glasses a little too hard on the table which spilt a lot of water and it ran off of the table on onto my lap. I was not pleased. I did get to meet some new people at the Hopper House though. Kari's friend Amanda from back home is studying abroad in Germany and she brought her friend Leo with her. It was great meeting them and they both were really nice people.
